(BEIJING, July 28) -- Carlos Sastre, the 33-year-old Spanish rider who has just claimed the crown of Tour de France on Sunday, July 27, will take the place of his compatriot Oscar Pereiro to compete in the road race in Beijing, according to the Spanish Cycling Federation.
Pereiro, winner of 2006 Tour de France, had to quit the Beijing Olympics, as well as the Tour, after a crash in the 15th stage that resulted in a broken arm.
Sastre will join a strong team, which includes Alberto Contador (winner of 2007 Tour de France and 2008 Giro d'Italia), Oscar Freire (winner of 1999, 2001 and 2004 World Cycling Championship), Alejandro Valverde (2006 UCI ProTour winner), and Samuel Sanchez (winner of 5 stages of Vuelta a EspaƱa).
